Grant Overview

Sub-Saharan Africa faces significant maternal health challenges, with high rates of maternal mortality and limited access to skilled birth attendants. The region's maternal mortality ratio is 542 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 12 deaths per 100,000 live births in high-income countries. Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) play a crucial role in maternal healthcare in many sub-Saharan African countries, but often lack formal training and integration into the healthcare system. The Global Maternal Health initiative aims to address these challenges by supporting maternal health initiatives that train TBAs and integrate them into formal healthcare systems. Capacity Building in Sub-Saharan Africa Nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and healthcare organizations with experience working in sub-Saharan Africa are eligible to apply for funding to support maternal health initiatives. Applicants should demonstrate a deep understanding of the region's maternal health landscape and a commitment to capacity building. The Global Maternal Health initiative prioritizes projects that focus on training TBAs and integrating them into formal healthcare systems, with a focus on sustainability and long-term impact. Unlike other global health initiatives, the Global Maternal Health initiative requires applicants to demonstrate experience working with TBAs and integrating them into formal healthcare systems. The region's healthcare infrastructure is characterized by limited resources, including staffing shortages, inadequate equipment, and poor transportation networks. Sub-Saharan Africa is home to a diverse range of cultures and economies, with many countries experiencing rapid population growth and urbanization. The region's population is predominantly young, with a high total fertility rate and limited access to family planning resources. Maternal Health Outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa The funding will support the development of maternal health initiatives that train TBAs and integrate them into formal healthcare systems, with a focus on reducing maternal mortality rates and improving health outcomes for mothers and newborns. Successful applicants will demonstrate a clear understanding of the region's maternal health landscape and a commitment to capacity building. Funding will be used to support project-based activities, such as TBA training, infrastructure development, and healthcare system strengthening, with a focus on sustainability and long-term impact. The Global Maternal Health initiative will be required to collaborate with local stakeholders, including Ministries of Health, healthcare providers, and community organizations, to ensure that initiatives are tailored to meet the specific needs of sub-Saharan African countries. The region's existing healthcare infrastructure will be leveraged to support the delivery of maternal health services, with a focus on enhancing existing services and infrastructure.
